Something spooky in our Stellar Backyard

If a star is massive enough to go supernova, its gravity will collapse it beyond this, overcoming the weak nuclear force, forcing atoms to overcome their mutual repulsion and fuse, until their is nothing to resist its collapse.

At which point the star simply Pops out of existance. Unfortunately for us and anything that could cross its path, it leaves behind its Gravity!
